Palmarin Merges: In the Studio

For this week’s painting challenge I felt like doing something ‘abstract’ today.  These were inspired by the dying flowers on my desk.  I couldn’t mix colors today.  Everything came out too pastel for me.  Maybe it is low blood sugar.  I’ll try again later on today after some lunch and gardening.

1. Good paper (Rives BFK)
2. Pencil and notebook for drawing out sketches ideas.
3. Inexpensive brushes from Michael’s or Joanne’s.  Get a variety pack with some wide brushes and a few thin brushes for more detailed work.
4. Collagraph materials – aluminum wine bottle tops, string, buttons, dried leaves and any other interesting bits you might find that are thin enough to go through an etching press.

1. Good screen-printing paper (Arches 88 or Rives BFK) and if you want to print on some T-shirts bring them too – see #6. (Art Media, Utrecht, Columbia Art & Drafting Supply, Daniel Smith Artist Supply)
2. Small pointy brush for applying the Speedball Drawing Fluid – go to Michael’s and get a cheap set of the smallest brushes thinnest brushes they have available.
3. Sketchbook and drawing material to work out ideas at home – 8.5 x 11 copy paper put into a manila folder is fine.  There is no need to buy a sketchbook if you are not inclined to.
4. Pre-Stretched MONOFILAMENT Screens available at Art Media, Columbia Art & Drafting Supply or Utrecht.
5. OPTIONAL: Any color other than black – Golden Acrylic and Golden Acrylic Screen-printing Medium are recommended
6. OPTIONAL: For Printing onto T-shirts please bring - cardboard rectangles, mat board, chipboard or any other stiff board that is approximately the same size as your T-Shirts (it provides the flat surface needed to pull a good print).

The FALL SESSION Screenprinting & Printmaking Survey classes begin this week!  The Screenprinting class is a direct draw class and does not yet include photo-emulsion.  But I am hoping that will change by the next semester. The survey class covers collagraph and relief printmaking.  I’ve been teaching here since we moved to Sherwood, OR 3 years ago.  It is a wonderful place to take all sorts of class.   Hope to see you there!

…and now for something completely different.

I want to buy a motorcycle, specifically a Honda 90S Café Racer.  I want to take a Honda 90S and make it into a Café Racer with a single drop seat, drop down handle bars, larger gas tank and convert the 90cc to a 120 or 150cc engine.  My friend, Mr. Moto says it can be done.  He’ll be doing most of the work so he should know. While there is no such company as Goldfinch Motorworks motorcycle, there is an actual copyrighted image, which I will print onto t-shirts to  make my motorcycle dream come true.  I will be selling them on ebay, etsy and maybe café press.  Stay tuned moto fans!

I opened the Audubon Society Pocket Guide book of Familiar Birds of North America and there he was, Cedar Waxwing.  This image is 4.5″ x 6.25″ painted in acrylic.  If you’ve decided to join me in this weekly challenge, send me an image and I’ll see if I can’t figure out how to post it on my blog.  Have a great week!
